Associated Bodies

Our Brass Ensemble is affiliated to the Moravian Brass Band Union of South Africa (BBSA), which was formed in 1951. A number of our players have served on the executive of BBSA since its inception. Henry Isaac Hitzeroth served on the first executive, and for a number of years thereafter. He was followed by Henry A. Hitzeroth. Thereafter James Brown, Antoinette Brown, Tyrone Hitzeroth, Venus Rasoul, Jo-Lynn Telling, and Laverne Van Wyk all served as Secretary. Tyrone Hitzeroth also served as Chairperson and President. Ulrich Jansen, Venus Rasoul and Ryan Jonas served as Vice-chairpersons. Jo-Lynn Telling, Ulrich Jansen and Laverne Van Wyk also served as Assistant secretaries. Jo-Anne Brown and Laverne Van Wyk served as executive members. Jo-Lynn Telling is the current President/Branch Chairperson, Alexander Hitzeroth, the Vice Chairperson, Laverne Van Wyk, the Secretary, and Tyrone Hitzeroth an Executive Member. Tyrone Hitzeroth is currently serving on the executive for 43 years which is the longest period served by anyone.

Tyrone Hitzeroth and Ulrich Jansen formed part of a delegation which represented BBSA at the Moravian Music Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA in 2003. Jo-Lynn Telling was on the delegation which represented BBSA at the Moravian Music Festival in Columbus, Ohio, USA in 2006.

Tyrone Hitzeroth and Jo-Lynn Telling represented BBSA in talks with the Luthern Brass Band (LBB) in Namibia and also in talks leading up to the founding the Evangelical Brass Band Association of Southern Africa (EBBASA) in 2004. Tyrone Hitzeroth was elected as the first Chairman of EBBSA and Jo-Lynn Telling is its current Chairperson. Laverne Van Wyk represents BBSA at EBBSA. The founding associations were BBSA, ELKSA (N-T), (now NELKSA), FELSISA and LBB.

Tyrone Hitzeroth, Jo-Anne Brown, Shareen Brown, Charmaine Fox and Berenice Leeuwskieter formed part of the first BBSA group to visit Germany in 1987. The main purpose of that visit was to participate in the 90th Anniversary of the YMCA Brass Band of Dettingen, Germany. The leader of that group was Michael Balie, the then President of BBSA and a member of our congregation.

Tyrone Hitzeroth, Lester Jonas and Marlon Louis were part of the BBSA group that that visited Germany and Holland in 2000, with Tyrone Hitzeroth as the tour leader. The main purpose of that visit was to participate in the World Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany. During that visit, Tyrone Hitzeroth signed a Partnership Agreement with Posaunenwerk Hannover, as president of BBSA.

Tyrone Hitzeroth and Jo-Lynn Telling were part of the BBSA group that visited Namibia in 2003, with Tyrone Hitzeroth as the tour leader. Adam Mohamed accompanied the group, on this fateful journey, as a driver of one of the busses. The main purpose of that visit was to participate in the 40th Anniversary celebrations of LBB.

Tyrone Hitzeroth and Jo-Lynn Telling were part of the BBSA group that visited Germany in 2010, with Tyrone Hitzeroth as co-conductor. The main purpose of that visit was to participate in the Brass Band Festival of Posaunenwerk Hannover in Hildesheim to co-incide with the 1000th Anniversary of the St Michael’s Church in Hildesheim.

Tyrone Hitzeroth, Jo-Lynn Telling and Courtney Uithaler were part of the BBSA (Eastern Cape Group) that visited Germany in 2013, with Tyrone Hitzeroth as the tour leader and conductor. The main purpose of that visit was to participate in the 2nd Unity Brass Festival in Bad Boll, Germany. Tyrone Hitzeroth was also a conductor at the Unity Festival.

Tyrone Hizeroth, Jo-Lynn Telling, Alexander Hitzeroth, Kim Whitebooi, Chesnay Potberg, Larchanetter Africa, Caleb Wabanie, Christopher Hitzeroth, Erin Jantjes, Austin Titus, Andrew Blouw, Kayla Hendricks, Cael Esau, Caitlyn Blouw, and Natasha Heugh were part of a BBSA group that visited USA in 2018, with Tyone Hitzeroth as tour leader and co-conductor, and Alexander Hitzeroth as co-conductor. The main purpose of the festival was to participate in the 3rd Unity Brass Festival In Winston-Salem, NC, USA. Alexander Hitzeroth was also a conductor at the Unity Festival.
